GM, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, Honda - Winners of 2007 Ward's Interior of the Year

GM, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, Honda - Winners of 2007 Ward's Interior of the Year by Zeke Gervis
The 2007 Ward's "Interior of the Year" awards are done and over with models from General Motors, Ford, DaimlerChrysler and Honda sweeping the top honors.
Thirty-four vehicles from 11 manufacturers all competed to bag the prestigious "Interior of the Year" award in the annual competition sponsored by Ward's AutoWorld magazine. The awards program is part of the annual Ward's Auto Interiors Show this week at Detroit's Cobo Center.
Winners were selected in two ways: one, the editorial staff of Ward's conducted a two-month review and analysis of the 34 nominated vehicles and selected the winners based on eight evaluation categories such as comfort, safety and design harmony. And two, members of the auto industry at-large were encouraged to participate in a popular vote online at http://www.autointeriors.com/ to see how they would evaluate the nominees vis-à-vis the Ward's judges. More than 1,400 popular votes were cast.
So who were this year's winners?

Ward's Editors' Choice: Chevy Silverado Industry At-Large Vote: Chevy Silverado
Award Category: Premium-Priced Truck
Ward's Editors' Choice: Lincoln Navigator Industry At-Large Vote: Cadillac Escalade
In addition to the vehicle awards recognizing overall interiors, Ward's editors also had Special Achievement Awards which included Best Brand Expression, Best Interior Trim, Best Overall Comfort and even Best Cup Holder.
Winner of the Best Brand Expression award is the Jeep Wrangler; for Best Interior Trim is the Infiniti G35; Best Cup Holder goes to the Chrysler Sebring; and Best Overall Comfort is awarded to the Lexus LS 460L.
The awards mark how consumers are placing huge importance of interiors when purchasing a vehicle. Because of the high value being placed by customers on automotive interiors (and not just engine parts like GM oxygen sensor for example), automakers are now more than ever placing an increased emphasis on their vehicles' interiors. In fact, according to CSM Worldwide, OEM spending on interior materials alone is projected to reach $10 billion by 2009.
A recent J.D. Power study also revealed that interior comfort is the second most important factor in choosing a vehicle, ranking ahead of exterior styling and just behind reliability and durability. This is the reason why automakers are all are too willing and jostle amongst themselves to win recognition such as Ward's Interior of the Year award.
Winning awards such as one from Ward's is being used by automakers to their full advantage. In fact last year, many of the winning manufacturers showcased their awards in new vehicle brochures and in national advertising to help attract consumers to their dealer showrooms.
Because of the growing attention being paid to their Interior of the Year Awards, Ward's decided to make three fundamental changes this year. First, Ward's editors developed a quantitative selection process that evaluated vehicle interiors based on eight criteria to ensure the integrity, transparency and objectivity of the competition. Vehicle interiors were scored on each of the eight criteria which included material selection; ergonomics; driver information; safety; overall value; comfort; fit and finish; and aesthetics and design harmony.
The new category (second) -- Economy-Priced Cars under $17,000, was added in consideration to the rising fuel prices which urged consumers to shift to more economical vehicles.
Third, Ward's instituted a process for recognizing outstanding features and design choices instituted in new vehicles or vehicle interiors. These awards are designated "Special Achievements" and focus on areas deemed worthy of honor by a consensus of the Ward's judges.
About the Auto Interiors Show Now in its 14th year, The Auto Interiors Show is presented by Ward's Automotive Group and is the industry's leading trade show and conference for vehicle interiors. Focusing on the latest innovations in vehicle technology and design to help suppliers respond to increasing OEM demands and changing consumer preferences, the Show features exhibits of leading suppliers who showcase trend setting products and materials with a view to the future of vehicle interiors. Honda's Diesel-Powered Accord can match Hybrids

Honda's Diesel-Powered Accord can match Hybrids by Evander Klum
It's not so long ago when everybody wants to own a hybrid vehicle because of its claimed benefits like better fuel economy and lower emission of harmful gases. But surprisingly the new results of the J.D. Power survey reveal that most car owners now prefer diesel cars over hybrids.
Sales of hybrids are observed to be declining reaching an overall drop in sales by almost 7 percent however for buyers with age ranging from 16 to 25 the drop is much higher at 13 percent.
With the turn of events it seems like the whole point of shifting to using hybrid vehicles seems to be fading without us noticing it. This is quite sad especially for the environment which is the main reason why buying hybrid vehicles was advocated. It seems like consumers now refused to pay the additional $2,396 for a hybrid version vehicle especially when it takes a while before the promised savings on fuel offset the high price tag of their purchased hybrids.
And speaking of diesel, in the past diesel was considered a notorious type of fuel ask an environmentalist if you don't believe. Diesel was then used in big trucks that are known for spewing really black and toxic smoke that pollutes the air. This is also one of the reasons why diesel was not very popular in the American market.
But after years of being ignored diesel is springing back with better performance and power boosted by newly developed engine and fuel technologies. Honda the producer of quality Acura catalytic converter is one of the automakers that have been working to develop better diesel engines that are as eco-friendly as the next hybrid vehicle in the market.
Japan's second largest automaker, Honda has developed a diesel-powered Accord which it plans to offer in the United States by the year 2010. The new highly fuel efficient Accord gets 63 miles per gallon or 62.8 mpg to be exact. And unlike hybrids the new diesel-powered Accord does not sacrifice power.

2008 Acura MDX, Acura Future Cars

So what will 2008 Acura MDX future car will have in offering. Well, speculations are already high with Acura fans for this future car. The new 2008 Acura MDX will for sure have super handling all wheel drive with a V-6 engine. There will not be a lot of changes but long awaited changes like HID headlight, LED Taillights and 20 inch 5 spoke alloy wheels could not be ruled out.The car first got full public view at 2006 New York Auto Show. The current model preliminary pictures are already available with the dealers but with very minor details. 2008 Acura MDX is likely to resemble Acura RDX in a big way. The wheels of the car look a bit bigger in the new version.Rear doors of the car also look bigger which is going to give a better access to the people at 3rd row. Though V6 engine is going to be there in the car, in my opinion V8 would have been better as most of the cars in this category have them.

10 Easy Steps to Speed Up Your Computer - Without Upgrading

By Jim ShutesLapeer Tech GroupIt seems that the longer you own your computer, the slower it gets! A lot of people will keep their computer until it gets so slow that they feel they need a newer, faster model. Some feel like the reason it is getting slower is because it is getting older, when that is just not the case. Your computer should run just as fast as the day you brought it home – if you follow these 10 Easy Steps to Speed Up Your Computer.1. Empty the Temp directory regularly. After a short while, the temp directory fills up with hundreds of temp files that always get scanned over when Windows starts up and when programs launch. This slows everything down immensely.Rule of thumb for Temp Files: If you don’t have any programs open (and nothing minimized in the bar below), then you shouldn’t have ANY temp files in your temp directory. If you do, delete them.To delete Temp files, make sure NO programs are open, and…a. In Windows 95, 98 or Me, go to C:WindowsTemp and delete everything inside the Temp folder.b. In Windows 2000 or XP, it is a little trickier. First, make sure that you can see hidden folders. Double-click My Computer. Click on the Tools pull-down menu, and then on Folder Options. Click on the View tab. Scroll down and click on Show Hidden Files and Folders. Click Ok. Now you can go to the C:Documents and SettingsAdministratorLocal SettingsTemp folder. Delete everything here.2. Empty the Temporary Internet Files regularly. To empty Temporary Internet Files, go to your Control Panel and double-click the Internet Options icon. Choose to Delete Cookies, and to Delete Files. This will clear all of your Temporary Internet Files.3. Check your hard disks for problems.a. For Windows 95, 98, or Me, double-click My Computer. Right-click the C-drive and click on Properties. Click on the Tools tab and choose to check the computer for problems. If you choose to do a Thorough Scan, this will do the hardware check for physical disk damage or sector damage. Choose to fix any errors it finds.b. For Windows 2000 and XP, double-click My Computer. Right-click the C-drive and click Properties. Click on the Tools tab and choose to check the computer for problems. Click on Check Now. You will then have two check boxes. The top option is for the file check, and the second option is for the hardware (physical disk) check. Check either one, or both. At least check the top one. Hit ok, and reboot. This may take some time, but let it run.4. An even more thorough disk check, would be to use a 3rd party utility. One of my favorites is TuneUp Utilities 2004. It does cost $39.99, but they do offer a FREE download trial of 15 days. This program does a really good job of fixing software and physical hard drive problems. It also tunes up your system for increased speed, and streamlines your operating system for peak performance. Download it HERE... http://www.lapeertechgroup.com/downloads.asp5. Or, you can do a few of the performance tweaks yourself, if you have Windows XP. By default, EVERYTHING is turned on in Windows XP. It isn’t very streamlined for performance, but rather for appearance. You can turn off a few of the unnecessary features, and Windows will still work just fine, and maybe a little faster. To do this, right-click on My Computer and click on Properties. Click on the Advanced tab. Under the Performance section, click on the Settings button. On the Visual Effects tab, you will see a list of check boxes. By default, these are all on. You really don’t need any of them for Windows to run. Go through the check boxes one by one, and determine which ones you can and can’t live without.6. Turn off Active Desktop. Active Desktop turns your desktop into a web page, and allows you to have things like a real-time calendar, and up-to-the-minute weather or stocks. These are nice, but really slow down your computer. And even if you don’t use Active Desktop for anything, just having it active can cause a performance decrease. Turn it off.a. In Windows 95, 98 and Me, right-click on the desktop and in the pop-up menu, choose Active Desktop. Inside that option, uncheck Active Desktop. If there is no check next to it, then it isn’t on. Don’t choose it. Instead, just click the desktop again to get out of the menu.b. In Windows 2000, right-click on the desktop and in the pop-up menu, choose Active Desktop. Inside that option, uncheck Show Web Content. Again, if there is no check next to it, then it is not on. Do not check it.c. In Windows XP, right-click on the desktop and in the pop-up menu, choose Properties. On the Desktop tab, choose Customize Desktop. Now, on the Web tab, make sure that there are no websites chosen here. If there aren’t any, then Active Desktop is not on. Cancel and go back to the desktop.7. Install and run a good AntiVirus program to keep out viruses that can take over your system. One of my favorites is AVG. It is not only a really good AntiVirus program, but it is also FREE! If you don’t have any AntiVirus software on your computer, get AVG AntiVirus NOW by downloading HERE... http://www.lapeertechgroup.com/downloads.asp8. Get rid of Spyware. A lot of computer users have Spyware and don’t even know they have it, much less how to get rid of it. If your computer has been taking you to websites that you don’t want to go to, or if you get pop-ups when you aren’t even on the Internet, or if your computer has been running extremely slowly lately, for no reason, you probably have Spyware. On all of the computers that I setup, I install two different AntiSpyware programs: AdAware SE and SpyBot. These two programs are highly recommended by TechTV (G4) and other computer authorities (including my own research on Spyware) and work very well together. They compliment each other and catch Spyware that the other misses, but together, do a very good job.Get SpyBot HERE... http://www.lapeertechgroup.com/downloads.asp. Download all updates and run the Immunize option a couple of times.AdAware SE does a good job when you keep up on the updates and manually scan your system with AdAware. Get it HERE... http://www.lapeertechgroup.com/downloads.aspIn some cases, when the Spyware has become too entwined into your system, even a computer repair technician can’t get rid of the Spyware. At this point, it is better to just backup only what you need and have the operating system reinstalled. Believe me, when your computer gets to this point, you don’t want to just put a “band-aid” on it. Just start from scratch with a clean system. It’s the best way to go.9. Streamline MSCONFIG. One thing that really causes a HUGE performance decrease is to have unnecessary programs running in the background. Some of these programs can be seen in your System Tray (located next to the clock). These are tiny programs that are robbing you of memory and processing power. Some of them you need, while most you don’t. Some of the programs you DON’T need are printer icons, CD burning icons, shortcuts to programs (such as video settings), AOL, any Instant Messaging Programs, etc. Just because these programs aren’t always running, doesn’t mean that you still can’t print, burn CDs or Instant Message. They can all be run from a shortcut. You can use a utility, called MSCONFIG, to turn OFF unnecessary Start Up items.a. In Windows 98, Me, and XP, click on StartRun and type msconfig. Click on the Startup tab. This is a list of everything that is running in the background, some of which show up in the System Tray. Now, be careful, some of these you do need. Some items to keep are Ctfmon.exe (XP), Scan Registry (Win98, Me), Task Monitor (Win98, Me), System Tray (Win98, Me), LoadPowerProfile (Win98, Me), Rundll.32, any AntiVirus programs (such as McAfee, Norton, or AVG). Others, you can uncheck, such as NeroCheck, ypager, qttask, AOL, and any other Instant Messaging programs, or printing programs. Remember, if something doesn’t work, because you turned it off, it can always be turned back on. You just have to reboot every time you make a change here. But, as you uncheck the unnecessary programs that run in the background, you will see that Windows loads much faster, that there are less icons in the System Tray, and that your system is much more “snappy” and quick to respond.b. In Windows 2000, MSCONFIG wasn’t supplied. You actually have to download and run an MSCONFIG utility. Download the MSCONFIG utility HERE... http://www.perfectdrivers.com/howto/msconfig.html.After you reboot, you will have a window that says that the configuration utility was edited. Just check not to show that in the future, a check box at the bottom. This just means that there was a change made to the MSCONFIG.10. Defragment your hard drives. NOTE: to efficiently defragment a hard drive, it likes to have 25% free space. It can still do the defragmentation with only 15% free space, but it takes quite a bit longer. If you can, delete any unnecessary files before deframenting your drives.a. To defragment your hard drives (in any Windows operating system), double-click on My Computer. Right-click on the c-drive and click on Properties. Click on the Tools tab and choose the bottom button, to Defragment Now…

COMPUTER SCIENCE INFORMATION

A computer from being a scientific tool to conduct research has taken many forms and have become as integral part of our lives. We see different forms of computers all around us laptops, palm pilots, tablet PC's and our own old faithful desktop PC's. We have to admit the fact that we can not live or resist life without a computer in our homes. With the advent of computers to our homes the science behind it too changed. Computers were no longer huge cupboard sized gizmos which only engineers could operate they had to be pleasing and user friendly. They also had to be in shape which was more pleasing than our earlier friend the television. So there was a huge spurge of designs and methods of making a computer cute. We now have study of ergonomics which goes into creation of computer accessories like keyboards, mice etc. This was the hardware part, the software also had to be user friendly, for you to read this article on internet there are at any given point of time four remote servers and millions of pixels on your monitor are working in harmony. This is the coordination and the high end software part. What about the display? Your browser? How should it take up all the complicated work and simplify the process to the end user. Well this is where the software came into picture, software which integrates, calculates and provides simple front end. Computer science also gave in to related developments like internet, World Wide Web and extended networks. This made the entire world a tiny place. Now you have information at your fingertips and few clicks away. At the same time the cyber world has given rise to many cyber crimes too. Cyber crime is no longer a soft offence in many countries it's turned criminal and now a day's security has become big issue over the internet.Security also has become big business, security not just to your hardware but also to your software. There are stray viruses over the internet waiting to get into your machine and disturb the way you work on your system. There are anti virus software's available to protect your computer from getting troubled. Concluding this piece computer science is very similar to apples on a tree. As we all know when we discover the apple is a tasty fruit apples do appear to have discovered a way to lure us. So all Adams and Eves should watch out for the apples which they eat. Too much is definitely too bad in the cyber world.

Digital Picture Frames

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and sometimes it takes more than one picture to showcase your memories. Today everything to do with photography is digital, digital cameras, digital storage, the only problem is when you want to display your prized photographs. More and more people believe in displaying there photographs in rich colours and paperless media. Paper has its limitations, the photographs you take may not actually come out as well as you expect once the colours have been adjusted for the printer, not to mention photographs on paper fade away with time. The solutions is simple, digital picture frames, they are ingenious devices that allow you to transfer photographs directly on the the LCD picture frames. Just take a photograph transfer it to the photo frame using a cable or a memory card. And within seconds you have gone from click to display. There are no repeated printing or developing charges involved, and the best part is that a single digital picture frame can actually display all your images, no need to pick and choose which ones to print and which ones to forget. Just like any digital device the photo frames today can be tweaked to manage various aspects like the frequency of displaying pictures, the colours, the sharpness etc. There has been a recent trend among photographers and amateurs alike, more and more are switching to digital photo frames to showcase there photos or to simply act as a pleasant reminder of there vacations. There is no limit to the number of applications a digital photo frame has, and in addition to being completely customizable they don't fade with time, or get smudged if you change the photographs. There is an increasing awareness in the market for digital photo frames, this has lead to increased demand and a drop in prices. The advantages that digital photo frames have over traditional photo frames are simply overwhelming, so much so that you might want to overlook the additional care that these photo frames require. A Digital photo frame is a must have for anyone who owns a digital camera and likes to display his or her skills. I f you are the kind of person who likes to preserve memories by photographing them, a digital photo frame is indispensable, there is no way you can ignore its utility, and appeal to the onlooker any more.

Web Development

The most common error most new comers to the world of website development make, is to confuse web design and web development. Both are interlinked but are completely different entities, and a company that offers web design does not always necessarily offer web development. The two aspects in creating a web site are listed below: a) Web DesignWeb design is related to the actual design of the web site, i.e. The colours, the images, the positioning of various elements like images etc. Web design is a more creative and an artistically influenced aspect of creating a web site. A well designed site does not necessarily mean its a well developed site, in fact this is the reason why most web development and web design companies, build all sites from scratch, there by insuring that design and development go hand in hand. b) Web DevelopmentWeb development is almost exclusively related to programming of web sites, all successful dynamic sites (sites that have forms etc) and e-commerce sites are programmed or are developed. Web development involves using various programming languages like Java, .Net, Perl, Ruby on Rails etc. There are numerous technologies to choose from when one is having a web site developed. In fact a closer look at sites, and you will notice most sites actually have a footer that says 'designed and developed' by such a such company, thereby acknowledging both aspects of creating a website .Once you have decided on a company that you think can meet all your requirements, be prepared to offer continuous feedback and opinions on what you are looking for. Web design is pretty much like building a house, you have to keep trying new ideas, making changes. But the most essential step is however to have as solid foundation and good workmen. The same applies to web design and web development. If you have the right people working for you, then nothing can come in between you and a successful, good looking and user friendly web site. Just remember, that Rome was not built in a day, if you are looking for something fast, quick and functional. Let your web designer's know. In today's fast moving day and age, most companies accommodate people who are looking to put up a site fast, and most companies today are adept at meeting dead lines. Just make sure the site is built from scratch and you are in touch with your web design team each step of the way.

SyncML. How it works?

There is a lot of talk about SyncML, and about what SyncML can do for you, but the fact is that not many people know what SyncML is, and even fewer people know exactly what it does and how they can benefit from it.SyncML, or as it is now fully known, Synchronization, for the S, and Markup Language, for the ML, or better known as Open Mobile Alliance, is generally used for device management and data synchronization. Now, before we go any further you will need to know what Open Mobile Alliance is. OMA, or Open Mobile Alliance, is, in short, an answer to many problems. Created in 2002 June, OMA was designed to gather many initiatives like SyncML Consortium, Wireless Village, WAP Forum, Mobile Wireless Forum and the like, to work together happily under one single umbrella, as all these different initiatives had similar bylaws, OMA took it upon itself to bring some order into the technology industry and make the bylaws more understandable to the common man.The reason SyncML exists is to give a common standard to everyone, as most synchronization solutions were application, operating system or vendor specific. So SyncML was created to give Open Standard solutions to everyone. Most major technological companies support SyncML already in most of their products, and more and more of the newer phones released to today, Nokia, Motorola, Siemens AG, IBM and Sony Ericson, come out with SyncML installed already. The vision behind SyncML was brought about by a man named Philippe Khan and was expressed thus: Worldwide integration and synchronization of all wireline and wireless devices. To answer the question, what is SyncML used for, is very simple indeed. It was created to make your life easier, which is the most important thing you should remember. SyncML phones are able to wirelessly connect to any SyncML server and store the private information for backup purposes. Once you sign up for this service, you will be able to backup your information, like your calendar, phone contacts, and to do list. What this company offers, which sets it apart from any other company offering this service is a backup service for your ring tones, pictures, and videos as well.SyncML offers the public a great service and it can all be done wirelessly. Everyone needs to make use of SyncML on their mobile phones and a SyncML server. In this day and age you will need to backup your phone's contacts, so in case you have an accident or you lose your phone, you will be able to simply log in to your SyncML account and restore your information to a new SyncML enabled mobile phone. In some cases, you are able to download your stored information to a desktop computer or laptop, and the other great thing is that they support almost any computer operating system. With SyncML you can also share your contact details, calendar events, and telephone contact address book with any computer you choose that support wireless transfer, granted you have the proper software. On the other hand, you do not need any software, you do not need to do any downloading, and you are able to transfer your information anywhere you choose. SyncML supports any handheld device synchronization to the SyncML database server of a computer or laptop you choose including any Blackberry or PDA.Copyright (c) 2007 Ravindran MG

"Can The Spam!"

Many of you were very concerned at the enormous increase
in junk email, estimated to have grown about 42% during 2001,
and the seemingly non-stop invasion of X-rated email.

Analysts predict that the volume of email on the Internet,
most of it junk, will grow another 50 percent in 2002.

That is a lot of email! With estimates that the number of Internet users is nearingthe 1 billion mark, the amount of email floating around the
Internet is only going to get worse. Many of you have asked if there is any sure-fire cure for all this junk email that we receive right now and any more that may
appear this year.

The short answer - Yes.
Make good use of your delete button! :-)
The long answer is - No.
No, there is no 100 percent cure for the spam that plagues us
all, X-rated or not. But there are several ways to try and alleviate
this problem. Most email programs, including Microsoft's Outlook Express, have
custom filtering features that are built into the program but which
are, more often than not, very much unused. The big problem in using ANY email filter system is thatthey may cause blocking of legitimate email.Basically, you can set up filters to remove email that comesfrom a specific email address or set it up to block email
which contains certain key words in either the Subject section
or in the Body of the message. Netscape Communicator 4.0 or later also have filtering ability
but Netscape Navigator does not have filtering ability. AndEudora 3.0 and above can also filter your email.Filtering will not eliminate all spam email but it can make your
life on the Internet just a bit easier.Just keep in mind that filters are a constant, ongoing process.
Spammers are always changing strategy to keep ahead of theFilters or other Spam Blocking software. Here are a few of the most popular email management tools:

SpamKiller by Novasoft
http://www.spamkiller.com/
Free 30 day trial. $29.95 w/free upgrades.

Spam Buster by Contact Plus Corporation
http://www.contactplus.com/products/spam/spam.htm

http://www.brightmail.com/
Considered one of the best, if not the top filtering program.

http://www.elronsw.com/
Internet filtering software. Free trial downloads.

Mailshell
http://www.mailshell.com/
Free 30-day trial. $29.95 per year. Use unlimited email addresses.

Once you decide how you want to approach this problem, then
it is just a matter of keeping tabs on your email and making
adjustments to block future changes that spammers might make.
Keeping on top of this will allow you to can the majority of
the SPAM that is now finding it's way into your in-box.

8 Key Actions for Protecting Your Privacy Online !

8 Key Actions for Protecting Your Privacy Online
Doug Partridge - All Rights Reserved

Are you at risk of losing your privacy? Answer the following three simple questions:

Do you shop or bank online?
Do you use an "always on" high-speed Internet connection?
Do you connect to the Internet from your home computer?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions and you have a Windows computer – then you are at risk. Your computer needs to have the appropriate protections and you must take extra steps to secure your computer and protect your privacy. Why is this so critical?
A recent study on Internet security sponsored by America Online and the National Security Alliance found that while most people thought their computers were secure upwards of 80% contained monitoring software known as "Spyware."
Spyware allows companies to download information from your computer without you even knowing it. Spyware represents a direct threat to online privacy and security.

But you can put a stop to it.

Here are 8 key actions for protecting online privacy:

1. Use a Personal Firewall. In addition to using an Anti-Virus program, a personal firewall is mandatory as it will block unwanted connection attempts. Sygate's Personal Firewall is a top-quality firewall and it's free for personal use. http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm

2
. Use a Spyware removal program. You can't rely on your Anti-Virus program to find and remove all instances of Spyware. Ad-Aware from Lavasoft is free for personal use. Recommendation: run a full scan at least once a week. http://www.lavasoft.de/

3
. Change to a More Secure Internet Browser. Due to the numerous security exploits targeted specifically at Internet Explorer, consider using another web browser. An excellent free alternative is "Firefox" from Mozilla. Not only is it more secure, you get a built-in pop-up blocker and Google search tool. http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

4
. Never provide personal or financial information to a non-secure website. A "secure" website is indicated by "HTTPS" in the address bar, and a small padlock icon in the lower right-hand corner of your browser window. http://www.verisign.com/advisor/check.html is a free place to check your browser's security capabilities.

5. Never provide confidential or financial information in response to an email request. Legitimate companies will never ask for personal or financial information over an insecure medium like email. Attempts to trick people into revealing personal and financial information through impersonated email messages is known as "Phishing." Some of these messages look very official and may come what appears to be a bona fide bank or company. Beware! When unsure if an email message is genuine it's best to telephone the company in question. Phishing email messages may be reported to http://www.antiphishing.org/.

6
. Read the fine print before typing in private personal information. Always read the privacy policy of a website to understand how they will use your information. Will they share or sell it? Be suspicious if no privacy policy is visible.

7. Never download or accept any file or program from an un-trusted source. Adware and Spyware are frequently bundled with "free" programs. You may download one program and find that your computer becomes infected with a Spyware programs.

8. Be wary and virus check all email attachments. Never open an unexpected email attachment, even from known friends or business senders. Their computers may be infected. Self-spreading worms can infect a computer and then send an infected email-attachment to everyone in the owner's address book.

Malicious Internet threats are clearly a formidable enemy; however, the good news is that tools and information are readily available so that you can enjoy the Internet without putting your computer and confidential information at risk.
